At the GSTL, Gert Rijlaarsdam managed from 1988 until 2006 and from January 2010 the management portfolio on curriculum development and services. Major projects were:
Development and implementation
1. We set up and ran projects funded by external bodies, like the European Commission, Surf foundation Netherlands, Digitial University (the Netherlands), State of North Holland, Nuffic, Mekong Delta Vietnam. Themes were an MA-level course on New Media & Language Teaching, ICT-rich environments in University Teacher Training, Learning from existing environments. Aim was to participate in innovative projects to enrich our experiences for the teacher training programme.
2. We set up and ran various courses for students from other Faculties on teaching and communication, to teach students communication skills for delivering disciplinary information in oral and written forms.
3. At GSTL, we were active in improving the teacher training curriculum, togetter with the cooperating practice schools. As head of initial training department, Gert Rijlaarsdam was responsible for the day-to-day business and the implementation of a completely revised teacher education curriculum. He was also involved in the development and establishement of academic schools for secondary education in Amsterdam, Almere and West Friesland, in particular in the development of the capacity in schools for educational design and scientific research.
4. At GSTL we innovated relevant practices, that proved to be relevant in other teacher education institutes as well on a national level: (1) Design Research as fundamental element in teacher practices; (2) the Minor programme to attract students in their bachelor programme to education; (3) the Academic Practice schools, where teachers (and teacher trainees) were involved in school based relevant research activities

Public Services
Education: Gert participated in Inservice training programs, most on improving the quality of lessons in Dutch school; he advises departments of languages about theiur curriculum and testing program.
Policy: Gert participated as head of the curriculum unit in national bodies (VSNU, Ministery of Education, Boards of Schools for Secondary Education. Related to the quality of the curriculum of Dutch language and literature, he participated in bodies of the Taalunie, and served as chief editor of Levende Talen to renew the formula and set up with the team of editors two new journals: Levende Talen Magazine en Levende Talen Tijdschrift. Gert co-chaired (with Huub van den Bergh) the national policy group to establish Referentiekaders (common standards for the teaching and testing of Dutch, from Grade 1-12), as subgroup of the what is called the Committee Meyerink (2008). Research: co-founder and chair IAIMTE (1996-2013), book series editor Studies in Writing (1994-2014), founder and co-editor in chief L1-Educational Studies in Language and Literature (1999-2014), founder and co-editor of journal of Writing Research (2006- ...), editor of Learning and Instruction (2014- ...), reviewer for various research journals, reviewer of career documents.

Certificated Soccer referee (KNVB); Training Max Storm, Dutch shepherd dog, 14.09.2004-26.06.07. Too dangeours to live (Jan van Oirschot, Berghem); then he trained Beer I, a German shepherd, who died in 2011; since 2011 he trains Beer II, another German shepherd (or; Beer trains Gert? Who knows.) And in May 2019 Arya Vida came over from a Barcelonean Asylum, almost three years old... a mix with much German shepherd.
Owned a Mercedes Camperbus Oldtimer 1977, but found no time to travel.
